SIR:
Today I wish personally to dictate this letter to you. Personally we have spoken by telephone so many times that I do not think I mistake if I express that a mutual current of affection has been born. I am less skilful in Castilian than my brother subordinate to me, but at the most, my poor will full of cordial spirit will make up amply for the poverty of vocabulary.
Good friend of ours: It has saddened me to observe in the modulation of your voice a certain bitterness at what you consider our having abandoned you only for a tiny transgression.
No: we are not going to do so. It is true that out of discipline (NEVER CONSIDER IT HAS BEEN A PUNISHMENT) we limited the telephone interviews until we verified your good will towards us.
At the last meeting we already observed your gesture of refraining from alluding to those experiences so frequently.
You are unfair to us, Sesma. We have not demanded that you stop believing in them; we understand the deep affection you feel for Saliano, your respect and fondness for his teachings, and we would never be capable of putting you between a rock and a hard place, as the saying goes. We have never asked you to feel more affection for us, nor ever to stop referring to him. We only begged you to distinguish hours and days when you had the kindness to refer to our teaching.
Goodbye, friend: We never use this farewell and much I wish you interpret it in a sense like “Until tomorrow”. I much trust I am authorised to speak with you soon, and that we have resumption of the pleasant talks that forged my deep friendship.
I let my brother dictate, who will better set out ideas that I do not manage to express less than with difficulty.
DICTATED BY DEI 98 son of DEI 97.
Little remains to be said to you: Sesma. We are truly deeply sincere when we tell you that, since you are one of the few people on your Planet who courageously accepted the version of our identity, regardless of the criticism or discredit of those around you, we necessarily had to feel genuine affection for you.
That is why your last phase of regression saddened us. First there were some allusions of yours to the effect that you felt less enthusiastic about this experience. Then your non-acceptance of the request we made to you that you refrain from mentioning your past experiences while you devoted your precious time to us, and finally a doubt proclaimed before everyone regarding our frustrated interview with Mr Gran, to whom, incidentally, we sent a letter and whom we tried to reach by telephone without success.
We recognise that this last matter would have had little importance had we not interpreted it as a symptom of a much colder state of mind towards us.
We have therefore tried to interpret your wishes and, sadly but respectful of your apathy, we have been timidly withdrawing, thinking that this contact with us no longer fulfilled you. What is more: we judged that you had been so gentlemanly and discreet that you did not dare to tell us so openly.
So do not interpret it as a sanction: Sesma. That would be an unnecessary cruelty towards you. We only await your decision. We await your noble and open gesture. We do not demand that you break with your friends, or that you place yourself violently between two fronts. What is more: if anyone has to give way, we prefer to do so ourselves rather than subject you to a cruel and merciless spiritual tension.
If you feel a true affinity for Saliano, for his ideas, for his personality, enigmatic to you, be faithful to him. But: Do you not think that this is no obstacle to our continuing this current of sincere friendship that has arisen between us? Devote most of your time to him. Devote to him, if you think it should be so, one hundred per cent of the pleasant hours you spend in the company of your friends of the Society. We only beg you to tell its members which days are to be devoted to the reading of these reports, avoiding all allusion to those experiences. Please do not interpret it as contempt for them: Sesma. The reasons are sincere: We simply wish to avoid confusion.
Be sincere, Sesma: Have the courage to make an anonymous written consultation among the participants of your Society. At least it will help you to compare opinions and thus be able to take a decision. Do not forget that we have heard veiled conversations critical of you for being repetitive in your talks. Learn also to listen, not forgetting that many people do not enjoy fluency of speech and refrain from stating their points of view aloud.
And truly, truly, we tell you that we believe your affection for us and for other groups and persons to be compatible. Do not torture yourself thinking the contrary. But we do solemnly repeat to you, even if you continue striving to seek identities and interpretations that state the contrary, THAT WE HAVE NO KNOWN LINK WITH SALIANO AND HIS GROUPS.
If, despite everything, you believe you see in certain figures, words or apparent symbols a hidden meaning of affinity, we respect your criterion WITHOUT SHARING IT IN THE LEAST.
Sesma: We are going to continue sending you our reports. There is only the objection of whether it would be advisable to interrupt their dispatch TEMPORARILY, since you usually rest in the summer season.
Tell us aloud, in a way we can understand, during the next Meeting. Tell us also what you intend to do regarding the allocation of days and hours. Meanwhile, you will receive the continuation of our teachings.
We hope that, if there is good will on your part, we will resume the telephone conversations, with the prior authorisation of our sister.
We are aware that until now you have fulfilled your commitments nobly and honourably. We realise that your small transgression has been almost involuntary and provoked by the sincere and spiritual affection you feel for Saliano, and that in reality your intention has not been to hurt or despise us.
We ask you to return his photograph to Mr Dionisio Garrido, expressing to him, even at the risk of being repetitive, our most sincere thanks.
We have observed in this gentleman an extraordinary interest in us. We wish to send him some reports, on condition that he shares them with you (by means of a copy) for their subsequent reading and circulation should you consider it of interest. We do not yet have authorisation to speak to him, but it is not impossible that at a not too distant date we may begin cordial talks.
And finally we urge you to be understanding regarding the general line of our study. Understand that certain teachings cannot be condensed into a few dozen pages without patient detours to reach supplementary explanations. It will take us quite a long time to finish. Any elementary book among those published on your planet is longer. We cannot and must not condense still further ideas which we are already offering you in a very abridged form. Please make the most intelligent understand this. The rest, however hard you try, will not understand it, since they do not know the time required to assimilate a genuine education.
Whether we continue or not depends on you more than on US: we have never intended to cut off these teachings except out of disciplinary obedience to our superior. We acknowledge that this time we feared a more drastic reaction on her part. We do not hide that we were glad to find that she did not take your small fault too seriously, showing herself, on the contrary, understanding.
